The Birth DoulaWhat is a doula?
The Greek word doula means woman caregiver.  We now use the word to describe a trained and experienced labor companion who provides the woman and her partner continuous emotional support, physical comfort, and assistance in obtaining information before, during and just after childbirth. A doula protects the mother's birth experience as the sacred event it is. A doula is there to support the mother regardless of the kind of birth she plans or experiences. A doula helps establish breastfeeding, if that is the mother's desire, and helps to promote mother infant bonding.

 Mother Infant Bonding
The bonding between a mother and her newborn at birth is critical to successful breastfeeding. Breastfeeding immediately after birth helps uterine contractions and reduces the chances of maternal hemorrhage. Skin to skin contact is important even if the mother does not plan to breastfeed.

Ante-partum doula
The ante-partum doula is available to help the family through a difficult pregnancy. It is my goal as an antepartum doula to help the expectant mother and her family deal with her high risk pregnancy. I am available to answer questions, help with light household chores, meal preparation, and sibling care. A mother on bed-rest or with restricted activity can easily become depressed. I can help find activities and fitness programs tailored to her needs, restrictions and interests to help her pass this time.
